The Contribution of Women to Arabic Literature (From the Pre-Islamic Era to 1258 A.D.)

مساهمة النساء في الأدب العربي (من العصر الجاهلي إلى عام ١٢٥٨م)

About this book

This research examines women’s contributions to classical Arabic literature, particularly their roles in poetry and prose from the pre-Islamic (Jāhilī) period through the Abbasid era, including Andalusian literature. Addressing the relatively limited preservation and recognition of women’s literary contributions in classical Arabic sources, the study explores the lives and works of prominent female poets and prose writers, the thematic diversity of their poetry, and their literary styles. Drawing on a wide range of classical and modern sources, it combines the compilation of literary materials with literary and critical analysis. Organized into seven chapters, the study discusses women’s social, political, religious, and intellectual status in Arab society, their poetic contributions across different historical periods, and their role in Arabic prose, including their contributions to hadith literature. Despite challenges arising from scattered source materials, textual inaccuracies, and incomplete records, the research seeks to provide a systematic account of women’s contributions to Arabic literary history and to address existing gaps in scholarship on the subject.
