A considerable section of international public opinion already holds an unfavourable perception of Islamic criminal law. In this context, ensuring judicial transparency and due process in its application is particularly important.
Otherwise, any irregularity or misuse in its implementation may further reinforce and deepen such negative perceptions.
Following the recent execution of two Bangladeshi nationals in Saudi Arabia, I hope the Saudi government will present the international community with the necessary information and explanations regarding the legal basis of the cases, the details of the offences, the judicial proceedings, and the rationale behind the sentences imposed.
If any procedural defects or violations of the requirements of a fair trial occurred, they should be impartially examined, and the findings should also be made public.
Such transparency would not only strengthen judicial accountability but also help address public concerns about the justification and proportionality of the punishments.
At the same time, it could play an important role in dispelling unfounded doubts and misconceptions about the application of Islamic criminal law and clarifying the principles of justice that should govern its implementation.
