Today marks the beginning of the blessed month of Rabīʿ al-Awwal, a month deeply associated in the hearts of the Muslim Ummah with the revered memories of the birth and passing of our beloved Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ.
Each year, the arrival of this month creates a special atmosphere of love, reverence, and emotional attachment to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ throughout Muslim communities. His blessed life, exemplary character, noble teachings, and boundless compassion for his Ummah are remembered anew. Such emotions are natural, and this love is indeed a demand of faith.
However, just as the expression of this love and emotion should be sincere, it must also remain within the boundaries established by the Sharīʿah.
Love for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is not merely a matter of emotion; it is an essential requirement of faith and a profound commitment to following him in every sphere of life.
During Rabīʿ al-Awwal, many of us organize elaborate gatherings and ceremonies to express our love and reverence for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Through such occasions, we seek to manifest our affection, respect, and joy at the remembrance of our beloved Prophet ﷺ. Allah Most High knows best the true state of our hearts.
Nevertheless, we must also remember one important point:
The emotion of love for the Prophet ﷺ is undoubtedly a pure and noble feeling of the heart. Yet the finest expression of this love lies in sincere adherence to his example and in making his Sunnah an inseparable part of our lives.
However profound our love for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ may be, its clearest evidence is the reflection of his Sunnah in our personal, family, and social lives.
The demands of loving him include obeying his commands, embracing his teachings, emulating his character, refraining from what he prohibited, and putting into practice his teachings of justice, truthfulness, compassion, trustworthiness, moderation, and humanity.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ is reported to have said:
**مَنْ أَحْيَا سُنَّتِي فَقَدْ أَحَبَّنِي**
“Whoever revives my Sunnah has truly loved me.”
— Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī
Allah Most High declares in the Noble Qur’an:
**قُلْ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تُحِبُّونَ اللَّهَ فَاتَّبِعُونِي يُحْبِبْكُمُ اللَّهُ**
“Say: If you love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you.”
— Sūrah Āl ʿImrān, 3:31
Thus, just as following the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is a sign of love for Allah, following his Sunnah and way of life is an essential and primary requirement of genuine love for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
For this reason, Rabīʿ al-Awwal should not be treated merely as a temporary occasion for expressing our emotions. Rather, it should be embraced as a month for studying the *Sīrah* (the life and biography of the Prophet ﷺ), engaging in self-examination, reviving the Sunnah, and renewing our commitment to shaping our lives according to the Prophetic model.
Through this approach, our emotions should not remain fleeting feelings but should develop into enduring love and a lifelong commitment to following him.
During this month, let us study the life of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—not merely to acquire historical information, but to draw lessons from his life.
Let us learn about his birth (*Mīlād*) and the social, political, and global circumstances of Arabia and the wider world at the time of his advent, so that we may appreciate the profound significance of his coming and the commencement of his Prophethood.
Let us study his worship so that we may improve the quality of our own worship.
Let us study his character so that our own character may become more beautiful.
Let us learn about his family life so that we may establish peace, harmony, and affection within our own families.
Let us study his social principles and sense of justice so that fairness and equity may be reflected in our interactions with others.
Let us learn about the history of his Daʿwah and sacrifices so that our own sense of responsibility towards the Dīn may be awakened and strengthened.
At the same time, we must remember that:
In expressing our love for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, it is not appropriate to adopt any statement, practice, or ceremony that transgresses the limits of the Sharīʿah or is inconsistent with his teachings and the way followed by his noble Companions (*Ṣaḥābah*, may Allah be pleased with them).
The expression of our love should never take a form that obscures the very purpose of that love. The true beauty of loving someone lies in expressing that love through the very path taught by the one we love.
The noble Companions of the Prophet ﷺ provide the finest examples of love for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Their love was profound, tearful, and marked by a willingness to sacrifice everything for him. Yet the greatest manifestation of their love was their obedience to and emulation of him.
They listened to his words, carried out his commands, embodied his character, and made his Sunnah an inseparable part of their lives. They therefore remain our finest models for expressing love for the Prophet ﷺ.
May the emotions inspired by Rabīʿ al-Awwal not fade away as soon as the month comes to an end.
May the heart that softens during this month remain tender throughout the year.
May the eyes that fill with tears while reading the Sīrah never become willing to abandon his Sunnah.
May the tongue that becomes eloquent in praising him never knowingly disobey his teachings.
And may the heart that claims to love him never turn away from his example.
A poet has expressed this thought with profound significance:
**مَنْ يَدَّعِي حُبَّ النَّبِيِّ وَلَمْ يُفِدْ مِنْ هَدْيِهِ فَسَفَاهَةٌ وَهُرَاءُ**
**الْحُبُّ أَوَّلُ شَرْطِهِ وَفُرُوضِهِ إِنْ كَانَ صِدْقًا طَاعَةٌ وَوَفَاءُ**
“Whoever claims to love the Prophet ﷺ yet derives no guidance from his example and does not follow his teachings—such a claim is nothing more than foolishness and empty rhetoric.
“The first and indispensable condition of love is this: if love is genuine, it must be demonstrated through obedience and faithfulness.”
The Persian Sufi poet and mystic Shaykh Maḥmūd Shabistarī (may Allah have mercy on him) has also expressed this idea beautifully:
**وَلی از پیروی چون همدم آمد**
**نبی را در ولایت محرم آمد**
**ز إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تُحِبُّونَ یابد او راه**
**به خلوتخانهٔ يُحْبِبْکُمُ اللَّهُ**
“One who becomes a companion of the Prophet through following him attains a special closeness and intimacy with him.
“By responding to the call, ‘If you love [Allah],’ and following the path it prescribes, one discovers the way that leads to the inner sanctum of the exalted promise: ‘Allah will love you.’”
Therefore, let us seize the blessed atmosphere of Rabīʿ al-Awwal as an opportunity not merely to speak of our love for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but to renew our commitment to learning his Sīrah, studying it extensively, adhering to his Sunnah, and shaping our lives according to his noble example.
Let us also cultivate a deep interest in the study of the Sīrah among our children, adolescents, and younger generation, planting the seeds of the Prophetic model in their hearts and lives.
May our love be radiant with emotion yet restrained within the boundaries of the Sharīʿah.
May our praise touch the heart yet lead us towards following his Sunnah.
And may our study of the Sīrah be rich in knowledge, while its ultimate objective remains the transformation of our actions and character.
**May Rabīʿ al-Awwal be a month of studying the Sīrah, renewing our love, reviving the Sunnah, and renewing our commitment to building our lives upon the noble example of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.**
“O Allah, grant us love for Your Prophet ﷺ, bless us with the ability to follow him in the best manner, and resurrect us beneath his banner. Āmīn, O Lord of all the worlds.”
