Dr. Ahmad Ali

Early life

Roots in Chattogram.

Dr. Ahmad Ali was born in 1969 in West Kalauzhan, Lohagara, Chattogram, Bangladesh. His later academic life would bring together traditional Islamic learning, formal study of Arabic language and literature, and sustained engagement with contemporary questions in Islamic thought and law.

He is the brother-in-law of Dr. A. F. M. Khalid Hossain. The family connection is part of a wider intellectual and scholarly milieu, while Dr. Ali’s own career has developed independently through teaching, research, writing and academic service.

Education

From Hadith studies to Arabic literature.

His formal education combines the madrasa tradition with university scholarship. He completed Fazil in 1985 and Kamil in Hadith in 1987, both with First Class results. At the University of Chittagong, he completed a BA (Honours) in Arabic in 1989 and an MA in Arabic in 1990, securing First Class, First position in both degrees.

He went on to earn a PhD in Arabic Literature from the University of Chittagong in 2002. In 2007, he completed a postgraduate diploma at King Saud University in Riyadh in the training of Arabic teachers for non-Arabic speakers, receiving an Excellent result. His academic distinctions include the Vikkhu Silachar Sastri Award, the Elite Paint Best Student Scholarship, University of Chittagong support for his doctoral study, and a King Saud University academic scholarship. He was also recommended in the BCS Education cadre.

Academic career

Three decades in teaching and higher education.

Dr. Ali began his professional career in Islamic higher education at Chunati Hakimia Kamil Madrasah, where he served as Muhaddith and also as Vice Principal. In 1996 he joined the University of Chittagong as a Lecturer in the Department of Arabic and Persian. He was promoted to Assistant Professor in 1999, Associate Professor in 2003, and Professor in 2008.

His university career has crossed institutional developments in Arabic and Islamic Studies, and he now serves as Professor in the Department of Islamic Studies. He was Chairman of the Department of Islamic Studies from 2015 to 2016 and earlier served as Senior House Tutor of A.F. Rahman Hall.

Beyond the University of Chittagong, he taught part-time in the Master's in Islamic Studies program at International Islamic University Chittagong from 2014 to 2016 and served as a part-time Muhaddith at Darul Ulum Kamil Madrasah from 2015 to 2017.

Scholarship & authorship

A broad body of work in Islamic intellectual traditions.

Dr. Ali has authored more than 50 books, including shorter scholarly works, alongside a substantial body of Bengali and Arabic research articles, edited publications and translations. His scholarship ranges across Islamic jurisprudence and comparative fiqh, Islamic law, Aqidah and theology, Hadith and Sirah, Tasawwuf, Islamic political and social thought, Arabic language and literature, calligraphy, and contemporary intellectual movements.

Among his sustained multi-volume projects are works on Bid‘ah, Usulul Iman, and Zubdatul Bayan fi Idahil Qur'an. The latter forms part of his ongoing full Bengali tafsir project. Volumes 5 and 6 of Usulul Iman remain forthcoming.

His books also address practical and contemporary questions, including Islamic banking and Shariah compliance, comparative jurisprudence, religious thought, social ethics, governance, and the encounter between Islamic intellectual traditions and modern ideologies.

Editorial & institutional service

Scholarship beyond the classroom.

Dr. Ali has contributed to academic and professional institutions in several capacities. He has served as Editor (In Charge) of Islami Ain O Bichar, the quarterly research journal associated with the Bangladesh Islamic Law Research & Legal Aid Centre. His academic service has also included expert roles in teacher selection and Shariah and Islamic Studies, literary and research organizations, alumni work, and governing-body responsibilities.

He formerly served as a member of the Shariah Supervisory Committee of Social Islami Bank Ltd. His other affiliations have included the Bangladesh Islamic Centre, the Universal League of Islamic Literature (Bangladesh Chapter), the Bangladesh Institute of Islamic Thought, and educational institutions in Chattogram.

International engagement

Participation in scholarly exchange beyond Bangladesh.

In 2013 he delivered an invited presentation in Makkah al-Mukarramah on the devotional and spiritual effects of the jurisprudence of priorities in Hajj, at an international seminar organized by the Ministry of Hajj of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. His international academic training at King Saud University also forms part of this wider engagement with Arabic and Islamic scholarship.

Continuing work

An active scholarly project.

Dr. Ali’s work continues through writing, teaching and publication. His current scholarly trajectory brings classical Islamic sources into conversation with questions of law, theology, social thought and contemporary intellectual life, while his ongoing tafsir and multi-volume book projects extend a body of scholarship built over more than three decades.
